Bihu:
Bihu is the national festival of Assam. It is mainly
dependent on farming. Bihu has been celebrated from ancient times. There are
three types of bihu celebrated in Assam :
BOHAG-in the middle of April-It is also called Rangali bihu.
MAAGH Bihu-in the middle of Jan-it is also called Bhugaali
bihu.
KAATI bihu-in the middle of Octber-it is also called
Kangaali bihu.
Each bihu coincides with distinctive phase in farming
calendar.The bohag bihu marks the new year at the advent of seeding time.The
kaati bihu marks the completion of sowing and transplanting of paddies and the
maagh bihu marks the end of the harvesting career. The folk song associated
with bohag bihu are called bihu geets or bihu songs.The main attraction of this
festival is mesmerizing Bihu dance.
AMBUBACI MELA:
Ambubaci mela is the religious festival celebrated in Maa
kamakhya temple.Maa kamakhya Devi temple is one of the strongest Saktipeetha
among nine Saktipeethas of hindu goddess durga according to hindu mythology.Kamakhya
devi temple in Nilachal hill of guwahati,Assam annually celebrated Ammbubaci
mela during the monsoon season to celebrate mesuration course of goddess kamakhya.In
assamese it is called “XAAT LOGA”. During this time period the temple is
remained closed for three days. People come in million, from sadhus to house
holders come from all over India and the world
to visit this mela and it is one of the most famous melas of India.
Shivraati mela:
It is another religious festival celebrated widely in assam.
The festival is mainly celebrated by the devotees of the lord Shiva.It is the
day shiva was married to Parvati.The shivrati festival observed on the 13th
night/14th day in thr Krishna paksha of evry year in the month of
Faalgun(faagun) according to hindu calendar. It is celebrated mainly in
Sukleshwar mandir(ghy), Shivadoul(sivsagar), Umananda mandir( ghy),Mahavairab
mandir(tezpur) etc.
JANMOTASAB AND TITHI OF
SANKARDEVA AND MADHABDEVA:
The “Baishnab”s of Assam celebrate the Birth and death
anniversary of Sri Sri Sankardeva and Sri Sri Madhabdeva.People celebrate it in
the “Naamghar”(temple) and also arrange “Naam” and “Bhauna”(devotional drama).
Ali Aai Lingang:
It is celebrated by the Missing or Miri ethnic community of
Assam India. It is a spring festival associated with agriculture, especially
with the beginning of Ahu paddy cultivation.the main attractive side of this
festival is Gumraag Dance.
Tusu puja:
Tusu puja is one of the important festivals of tea tribes of
assam. It celebrated in the Maagh(jan)of assamese calendar. They worship
goddess tusu in this festival. The main part of this festival is Jhumur Dance.
Rongkaar and Sumangkaan:
It is one of the main festivals celebrated by the Kaarbi
people of Assam. Genrally Rongkaar festival is celebrated in the spring time as
“Basanta Utsav” and Sumakaan is celebrated on the death ceremony(on the 10th
day) of a person.
Rajani Gawra and Haarni
gawra:
This is social religious festival celebrated by the dimasa
people of Assam. Before cultivating any new paddy, this festival is celebrated.
Baaikhu:
This is festival celebrated by the Rabha community.
According to Rabha mythology, this festival is observed to worship the goddess
of wealth,”Baaikhuk”.
Beside the above mentioned festivals, assamese people
celebrate some common Indian festival like Holi,Dewaali,Duraga puja, Christmas,
Eid, Mahrom etc.
