Assam: the state of possibility
This beautiful
part of land was previously known as Kamrup and Pragjyotishpur and its capital
Pragjyoitshpur was the first capital (lighting town of east). In the 13th
century, the Ahom(a tribe) after winning the place name it Assam. In the
history, literature and the biographies from 15th century the names
“Asom”, “Assam”,”Assom”,”Aasam”,”Ahom” etc are known.
According to
the scholars the name comes from-
“As the
place is full of mountain and hills and so it is not plain. That is why it is
known as “Asom”. Some other says there is no such natural beauty is found in
any other place like Assam. So it is known as “Asom”. Some other scholars say
that this place was ruled by Ahom and the word “Asom” is derived from the word
Ahom.
Another derivation is:

community” mentioned that the word “Asom” is derived from the bodo word
“Su-Sum” which means plane.
Location:
The
beautiful land of natural beauty is situated in north east corner of India. It
is extending from 80 degree 42min E to 96 degree E longitude and 24 degree 8
min to 28 degree 2 min N latitude has an area of 78438 km sq. similar to that
of Ireland and Austria.

Climate
Characteristics:
Assam is
mainly in temperate region and experience heavy rainfall and humidity. The climate
of Assam has four seasons, namely:
Winter
Pre monsoon
Monsoon
North Monsoon
Monsoon
North Monsoon
Winter last
from November to January. From February to April its Pre monsoon and Monsoon is
from May to July. From August to October Assam faces North Monsoons. The
temperature of Assam is relatively low comparing to the other places of India.
In winter also, the level of coldness is not that much high.
Assam Population
As per details from Census 2011, Assam has population of
3.12 Crores, an increase from figure of 2.67 Crore in 2001 census. Total
population of Assam as per 2011 census is 31,205,576 of which male and female
are 15,939,443 and 15,266,133 respectively. In 2001, total population was
26,655,528 in which males were 13,777,037 while females were 12,878,491.
Assam Literacy
Rate
Literacy rate in Assam has seen
upward trend and is 72.19 percent as per 2011 population census. Of that, male
literacy stands at 77.85 percent while female literacy is at 63.00 percent. In
2001, literacy rate in Assam stood at 63.25 percent of which male and female
were 75.23 percent and 51.85 percent literate respectively.
In actual numbers, total literates in Assam stands at 19,177,977 of which males were 10,568,639 and females were 8,609,338.

Assam Sex Ratio
Sex Ratio in Assam is 958 i.e. for
each 1000 male, which is below national average of 940 as per census 2011. In
2001, the sex ratio of female was 932 per 1000 males in Assam.
